Supermicro X10SDV-TLN4F Mini-ITX Motherboard

Post by taffeys »

Anyone tried NAS4Free on the Supermicro X10SDV-TLN4F Mini-ITX Motherboard?

This board has an Intel® Xeon D-1540 8-Core 45W CPU.

nice board. but its about 1000 euros.

i dont know if i would buy a build in 10gb ethernet adapter atm with the current price.

for a nas the C2550D4I seems to be more suited and you could add a 10gb adapter onto it

thinking about it some more.

to be able to max out the 10gb you would need an array for 10+ drives (unless using ssd)
and since samba is mostly single threaded you want a processor with very high single thread performance.
it might be that the D-1540 is to weak for that and you need something in the range of a E3-1276V3.

I was also looking at the ASROCK RACK C255D4I. I'm not sure the C2550D4I with its Avoton C2550 Quad-Core is powerful enough. Only having 2 x SATA3 6.0Gbps, 4 x SATA2 3.0Gbps controlled by the C2550 is a negative. The one PCIe slot is only 2.0 x 8 but I would just run an LSI 9211-8i HBA ("IT" mode) in it initially. For now I could live with the two 2 x Intel i210 NICs and the dedicated IPMI. But there's not much future-proofing with this board.

So anyone have any input on the capabilities of the Avoton C2550 Quad-Core?

So going to the Intel Avoton C2750 Octa-Core Processor wouldn't yield much better results?

Then maybe I should be looking at something like the ASRock E3C224D4I-14S or the MT-C224 Extended mini ITX Server LGA1150 Motherboards. I already have an E3-1275LV3 and an E3-1265LV3.

Please share your thoughts on going this route instead of an Avoton-based board.

it all depends if you are going to use 10gb ethernet.

for 1gb ethernet the C2550D4I is fine.
there is a thread by crowi viewtopic.php?f=63&t=6515 about it.

sata3 or sata2 does not matter unless you are using ssds. mechanical hds cant saturate either.

but it really depends on what your requirements are and how many drives you are planning to use.

looking at your current setup with 8 drives the only mini itx case that would hold that would be the
Silvertone DS380 or the NSC-800

but if you want to go beyond that you would have to look at something like the norco RPC-4224.
and then the whole mini itx thing becomes irrelevant.

Well taffeys,
would you mind sharing a description of what do you want to do with your NAS and in which environment you want to use it ?
I think this might be helpful to give you a good advice.

Thank you b0ssman and apollo567 for your input and support. I truly appreciate all the effort you and the developers put into NAS4Free.

I will take some time and respond with my network map/environment (current and projected) and my needs/expectations of my main server in a day ot two.

Regards,
taffeys

I have decided to go with an ASRock E3C226D2I with a Xeon E3-1265L v3 and 16GB of DDR3L-1600 ECC RAM. I could not justify the expense for the Supermicro X10SDV-TLN4F Mini-ITX and I don't see any reason for me to go the 10Gb ethernet for a very long time. Parts will be arriving in a few days. Going to sell my QNAP TS-431+.

there is not going to be much difference between that and your current setup.

Performance-wise you are most likely correct. I’m keeping my Dell system and will use the new ASRock-based one as a back-up. I do expect to see better power efficiency with this new system. Smaller foot-print is a plus too.
