I see plenty of post on How can I upgrade and even more posts of something going wrong and many many hours spent after a upgrade to get it working. Sometimes they even have to revent back.
So why are people upgrading from a working NAS? The only reason I see is that they are cutting support for version 9.x.x.x but I don't see a list of
why version 9.3 is better than 9.1? or why 10.xx is better. I just see people upgrading for the sake of doing it. I don't see anyone upgrading because their nas is broken with version 9.1 sandstorm (very stable)
I see many new issues with new versions and lots of Don't do this because its broken etc.
I would like to see a comparison of versions. Its hard to see just what is different because the changelog does not mention things that might not run under the new version. things like MINIDLNA.
I am very hesitant to upgrade without a PRO/CON list of version 9 vs 10
My needs are basic, RAID 1 ZFS and MiniDLNA. I don't need the rest. Its just a simple box to store files, not trying to make it something its not.

Re: Why upgrade from a working 9.x.x version?
There were some security problems in 9.1. Other than that if your version is working fine for you there is no reason to upgrade. The main reason that nas4free is getting upgraded to the new version is hardware support. 9.1 for example had no support for the new Intel network cards. And since the development Team is small they can't keep supporting all old versions.

Re: Why upgrade from a working 9.x.x version?
Thanks BOssman,
That makes sense to support the newer hardware. On a fresh installation I would probably go with 10 but for my currents ones I don't want to rock the boat. Seems every time I upgrade its a more time than expected experience. I think I read that they don't recommend using older versions but failed to give a specific reason.

Re: Why upgrade from a working 9.x.x version?
The specific reason to not use old builds is security related.
Newer builds always fix a lot security issues and other small bugs.
it's not only nas4free code but also FreeBSD the underlying OS of NAS4Free
https://www.freebsd.org/security/advisories.html
For this my advice is to upgrade your system regular!

Re: Why upgrade from a working 9.x.x version?
Everytime I upgrade from 1349 my cifs stuff breaks with my Win2k3 server, so until I move up to a different server I am not going to bother. If it ain't broke..don't try and fix it I say. My nas is internal behind 2x firewalls. So security is not a huge issue for me. Save yourself hours of work if you are happy with your current version. Work on an upgrade when you have new hardware to even bother.

Re: Why upgrade from a working 9.x.x version?
I upgraded from 9.1. to 9.3.0.2 and my issues so far:
Jails install but Plex wont transcode in it. now running it in a ubuntu virtualbox VM (slower)
Some status pages don't work, CIFS/SMB usage does not display
Many extra error lines regarding SMB/CIFS that i'm to annoyed to try and fix
Worse is that I cant install 9.1 on this hardware as the installer for virtualbox will not now find all required packages in 9.1
At my old work the are running on an old freenas 0.74, or some such, that has been up for years as a scratch disk /dumping ground.

Same here, running stable and good on version "NAS4Free 9.2.0.1 (revision 972) x64-full", on ESXI. I will never upgrade to an newer hardwareCrashDavis wrote:Everytime I upgrade from 1349 my cifs stuff breaks with my Win2k3 server, so until I move up to a different server I am not going to bother. I am using ZFS, I notice in the release notes there are some benefits made to the ZFS for handling the disks, but already have experienced a broken drive and the replacing the broken drive went with out issues. Although couldn't use the ZFS Tools, but the command line did the trick. SO, I guess that might be an case to upgrade for others... here, I believe in my current version for home usage.
command used: zpool replace pool123 ada3
