NAS4Free 10.2.0.2.1778 released (FreeBSD 10.2-RELEASE)

Post by zoon01 »

The nas4free team is pleased to announce it's first release of 10.2.0.2.1778.

Yes, you do read it right!
Even before FreeBSD has send out the PGP-signed email is to -announce@ we have the first build on FreeBSD 10.2-RELEASE-P0. :D

http://sourceforge.net/projects/nas4fre ... .0.2.1778/

Everyone can upgrade from NAS4Free version 9.3.0.2.1310 or Higher.
This 10.2.x series are the direct replacement for 10.1x series!

README & CHANGELOG

NAS4Free Upgrade from below 9.3.0.2.1310 is NOT possible!!!
=====================================================
Upgrading NAS4Free "Embedded" or "Full" from any version below 9.3.0.2.1310 by webgui or from
LiveCD/USB is problematic, due a new size of boot partition & partition layout.
Please download and save your NAS4Free config to a safe place and backup all files from second
partition if you use boot disk as data disk.
INSTALL FROM SCRATCH IS THE ONLY WAY!
After installation you can restore your config.
Sorry for inconvenience.
** ! Tools to write extracted embedded file are not supported ! **
You must use the liveusb/CD for it's first installation!!!.

Install from scratch notes
======================
** Embedded.img.xz is only for upgrades by WEBGUI, do not extract and write to any media! **

Download NAS4Free livecd or liveusb and boot from it.
The compressed LiveUSB.img.gz needs to be extracted before you can write it to usb media,
you can use it with Win32DiskImager or any other tool.
Press 9 for the install menu and perform an embedded installation.

Upgrade note:
=============
You must associate CARP with physical interface explicitly after upgrading to 10.X.
You may need modifying your NFS and AFP share setting.
You may need modifying your ftp setting, no longer SSL is supported (only TLS).
Send Buffer Size/Receive Buffer Size in CIFS/SMB is changed to 128480 since 9.3.0.2.1375.
/var and /var/tmp size has changed.
After the upgrade please do make a new backup of your config System|Backup/Restore.

Extended GUI note!
Don't use current Extended GUI on 10.2.0.2 series yet, disable it first before upgrade.

ZFS User note!
After upgrading, you must re-sync ZFS configuration from Disks|ZFS|Configuration|Synchronize.

Requirements
============
Embedded: 2GB CF/USB/SSD (NAS4free "Embedded" is Recommended Install)
Full: 4GB HDD/SSD (For developers and some advanced users, Not Recommended!)
Swap less: physical memory 2GB or higher needed.
With swap: physical memory 512MB + swap 512MB (swap 1024MB recommended).

*Note: LiveCD is not supported on swap mode except installation and upgrading.

BUILD 10.2.0.2.1778
===================
Changes:
- Upgrade to FreeBSD 10.2-RELEASE.
- Add Mellanox ConnectX-2 EN driver module. (x64 only)
- Upgrade bash 4.3 to patch 42.

Note:
- iperf2 has been replaced for iperf3 because of inconsistent results for UDP above 2Gbps.
- iperf3 is not backwards compatible with iperf2.x.

Permanent restrictions:
- It is not possible to format a SoftRAID disk with MSDOS FAT16/32.
- It is not possible to encrypt a disk partition, only complete disks are supported.
- AFP shares with TimeMachine support are limited to max. 4 shares.

Just updated.

Seems fine expect for CPU frequency which doesn't go below 1998MHZ. Power being set at adaptative (low power comsumption). Was fine in previous builds, dropping at ~500MHz on idle.

What are your system specs.

I do notice a small lower power consumption on 10.2 compared to 10.1 with my system.
Strange it's for you the other way.

Can the Devs look in to the NUT portion of NAS4Free? I have a Tripp Lite 1300LCDT that won't communicate with the NUT Service.

I posted in the UPS portion of the forum, viewtopic.php?f=46&t=9385

I have checked on the NUT's official website... and I *think* its a supported UPS via this http://www.networkupstools.org/ddl/Trip ... 0LCDT.html I believe it was tested on v2.6.4

If the Devs can look in to this, that would be great.

I confirm change in power consumption management.

Previously with adaptive my CPU was running @400/600/800MHz when idle - after upgrade it's not going lower than 1600Mhz.

I can confirm, my rig is in idle @ min 1500 Mhz, when I got previously idle @ 800 Mhz only. Was there a change in Powerd configuration ?

SuperMicro X10SLM-F with Pentium G3250 and it does idle at the lowest setting 800mhz... HOWEVER! Prior to the upgrade the lowest setting was 300mhz... however... I can say that it NEVER reached 300mhz anyways

Is anyone going to look into the power consumption? Definitely not correct. Freq too high & CPU utilization went down. For me it's a strong reason to downgrade.

This is FreeBSD's change, not N4F.
https://svnweb.freebsd.org/base?view=re ... ion=276986

You can enable it by System|Advanced|loader.conf.
The key is "hint.acpi_throttle.0.disabled" and the value is "0".
To take effect, you need reboot the machine.

that is true. while the frequency under load matters for power usage, the voltage rather than the frequency is far more important while idle.

most processors have an internal table that says at that frequency set the voltage to that value. going lower than the lowest value does not give you much of a benefit.

Depends on how much is that. Every 1W equals ~2€ on electricity/year for me. Also it is unwanted heat which increases the electricity costs further by turning on temperature triggered rack fans - and every watt does matter in current 34+°C outside. It's not much ( :-) ), but still - I want to be as power saving as I can be.

BTW, have anyone tried impact of this?

Code: Select all

performance_cx_lowest="Cmax"
economy_cx_lowest="Cmax"

I am talking to someone on the NUT emailing list, they need to know the ./configure that is being used to compile NUT in NAS4Free. Is there a way I can get the sources for that and send it over to the people over on the NUT mailing list?

Did all :

Code: Select all

hint.p4tcc.0.disabled=0
hint.acpi_throttle.0.disabled=0
and

Code: Select all

performance_cx_lowest="Cmax"
economy_cx_lowest="Cmax"
and everything went to normal. CPU is again running @400-800 and temperatures dropped down by few degrees.

BTW - if the system values are right, then difference between 1600 and 600Mhz is ~7.5W. Which is a significant difference.

if it's giving such adverse effect on cpu usage and consumption, why was such a change implemented by default?(i.e. clocks are NOT throtlling to lowest posible state)

it can trivially be re-enabled at runtime if anyone wants it."

i already saw that SVN, it explains little to nothing(does not provide relevant links to the discussion, does not go into detail or proide examples of power consumption, graphs, statistics across several CPUs).
i just tested it in my 10.1 install and with those two disabled i only have 2 clocks, 1200 and 2400Mhz on my C2D E4600, with TCC and acpi throttle i go down as low as 800Mhz idle and usually 1050Mhz.
so i'd say they're not "unhelpful at best" but the total opposite a een in this thread itself with people whose CPUs are not idling as they should with those changes

I think it is because FreeBSD in not specifically for home Nas4Free servers.
Read/write operations need CPU.
But if ur server mainly does nothing, just simple enable it.
why is it such a big problem to write 2 lines into a file, if u need that feature?
anyway, u can ask developers to enable them by default.
