SMB network error on win7 workgroup

Post by RAJOD »

I took my ZFS mirror lenovo to the office and plugged it into the swith and started to do a few tests to make sure it was working.

I could browse shares but doing filer copies of a directory with many files it would get about 1/2 way then sort of stall then a windows popup network error button is displayed. It was intermittant, meaning some files make it others don't.

Its only a 4Gb ECC Nas with two 2tb WD reds.

I fixed it but I am not sure why it worked. Just looking for an explanation.

Its version 10.2 of nas4free

The fix was to do these things and I am not sure which one fixed it since I did them all at once.
In the SMB settings
- changed send and receive buffer size from the default of 128480 to 64240
- unchecked "Enable Dos Attributes
- changed AIO write size from 1024 to 4096.

I basically copied the settings of my home 9.1 nas (which has given me ZERO issues in 4 years).

So why was I getting these errors at the default settings? Why did I have to change them and which one fixed it?

async io sometimes can cause problems. you should have looked in the log file.

however the error could have been caused by something else.
bad networking in the office. hd failure etc...
Nas4Free 11.1.0.4.4517. Supermicro X10SLL-F, 16gb ECC, i3 4130, IBM M1015 with IT firmware. 4x 3tb WD Red, 4x 2TB Samsung F4, both GEOM AES 256 encrypted.

Bossman is the man. Yes for some reason unchecking Async helped. I thought it was fixed but then on another workstation when I copied a large file from the nas to the workstation it would stall and give network disconnetion. I turned off async and now its fine.

Errors, only error I saw was a can't find child error - ignoring.

Bossman,

Why did async cause issues? On my other 2 NAS I have async on and no issues. But on the Lenovo I had to set it off. Is it the network card that came with the lenovo? Or could it be 10.2 of nas4free? I am running 9.1 and 9.3 on my other boxes.

Did not see a fix for it but it appears to by a harmless bug.

I've been having problems with large file transfers as well since moved from samba 3 to 4.
I cannot get any useful information from log files of samba. Nothing. The smdb proccess simply die, writing nothing on the log. Than I get the child missing log and smdb is restarted.

Does someone else has similar issues?

I've tried with and without asynchronous, large read/write, different values for buffers and all other settings available. I'm on 10.2.0.2.1905 right now but have been having this issue since samba 4.

FTP transfer, SFTP, rsync or direct copy of the same file works fine.

The file is 5GB. Sometimes it crashes on the beginning, others on the end of the copy. Sometimes it just copies without errors. Tried other files with the same results.

Any ideas?

Well nas4free sometimes is unstable. That is why when I get mine working I don't mess with it for a long time. My first NAS I think is 4 years up and running 24/7 zero issues. Only time I get issues is when I change something or upgrade to new version. If its not broke I don't fix anymore.

I on version 10 I used smb2 and not smb3 even though I have a HV server 2012 on the network. Why? Because smb2 works fine for my needs and have heard others with issues using smb3 setting.
