Maintenance of a server is number 1 priority :D
This means you have not visit your parents for 828 days ;)

Well after all i guess the server is not exposed from internet anyway

I use smoothwall so ports can be open but only for those wich has access.
It means it can eighter be open by static ip`s or dynamic.

But when it comes to dynamics it involves a second smoothwall.
This firewall can not be upgraded as it breaks dynamic ip portforwards.

Hello,

Really funny... I recently came across a FreeNas 0.68.5RC1 install CD from my first (and actual) NAS system.
A good old HP Vectra VL PII 400 with 768 MB RAM, running 24/7 since February 2008 except for HDD replacement / upgrade, dust removal and upgrades... 4 GB CompactFlash embedded system (10.2.0.2235)
Sorry guys, I cannot hold on with uptimes greater than 100 days because I regularly take care of my server...

So as you can see, the systems run rock-solid and are very reliable, many thanks to the developers and keep up the good work!

Ciao @+

I just turned mine off for some maintenance a few days ago. I should have waited the 6 days, because what I wanted to do didn't work out as well as I had hoped...

I don't think anywhere I have lived has provided such reliable mains power as your servers seem to be blessed with. We get powercuts from ten seconds to eight hours maybe every three months or so. I've been using UPSes constantly, on all equipment, since 1997 so I need to power down all my gear every six to nine months in order to replace the UPS battery. As soon as the UPS alarm signals a dropped cell, swapping its battery is a priority since I never know when I'll need it for cleanly shutting down everything in the dark. The only way I'll get uptime over a year is with a laptop... anyone know a laptop with Xeon, ECC, and at least 4 LFF bays? :-p
