Monitoring instead of information mail rapports

Post by MisterE2002 »

Hi,

First of all. Sorry about my English. It is not my native language.

Second, i really like the Nas4Free approach of a NAS. Do one thing, and do it good.
However, i really am paranoid at my data. The reason i use ZFS.
But after some Monitoring tests it seems that it is not implemented? (or not easily understood)

I can enter my mail properties like SMTP and the mail address itself at System=>Advanced=>Email.
This form does not inform me WHAT and WHEN it will send me a mail (by default?)

* will it send mails when the motherboard/cpu gets to hot? Where can i set the thresholds?
* will it send mails after a disk get lost? According to the help page it will (automatically?) (http://wiki.nas4free.org/doku.php?id=do ... nced_email) . But i tested it. I shutdown the system and remove a drive. After startup i would expect Nas4Free to Alarm (pc speaker beeping/send mail/big red letters when logging in the web gui). But i don't receive any mail and the online message is a little line with "degraded" at "disk space usage".

At the Disks=>Management=>SMART i can also enter a mail address (The same smtp as the Advanced form i suppose?)
Why is this not a dropdown of an account of the System=>Advanced=>Email form.

I found Status=>Mail reports. It sends a lot of info. 2 issues:
* I am not that much interested in the "happy flow" info. But like to be informed when something gets awry (temperature/strange SMART/pool status change/ups kick in/threshold space used). I like to set a temperature threshold to shutdown the system.
* It only sends a mail at a scheduled time. I like to be informed at the moment the disk crashes, so i can order a new one directly.

I found something like the "Extended GUI". Not sure if it contains what i'm looking. I don't like to install plugins. Monitoring should be a core feature of a NAS?

Setup SMART and verify it is able to send status emails.

Then you will ne notified the instant a drive has trouble

Also set up extended GUI to send an email the minute your zpool becomes degraded (also if you hit usage limits)
NAS4Free Embedded 10.2.0.2 - Prester (revision 2003), HP N40L Microserver (AMD Turion) with modified BIOS, ZFS Mirror 4 x WD Red + L2ARC 128M Apple SSD, 10G ECC Ram, Intel 1G CT NIC + inbuilt broadcom

Can someone explain why this extended GUI is not merged into the normal source code?
I don't like to overwrite html files with random files of the forum (but credits to the work of the author) What will it overrule of the base-release, no automatic updates, etc.

Fast alerting is a must have for the serious data collector, this is the reason i switched to FreeNas.
I can not find cpu/motherboard thresholds here to set either but when i jam out a disk i get a mail directly.

A new release of eGUI is now available => [EXTENSION] Extended GUI which includes now email alerts as well as audible alerts for ZFS and CPU alarms (thresholds can be set!) and can be cleared by button on STATUS | SYSTEM page.

Best regards
