Filesystem: read/write local + read on MacOS?

Post by bafforosso »

Hello,

In an undetermined period of time (probably a month or so), someone will come to get a copy of one of my dataset. There is a bit more than 3TB of data and I already have an external HD to copy the data to and that will be handed to the guy who'll come.
What I was thinking to do was to setup a daily local rsync job from the dataset to the external disk so that when the guy comes I only have to do a last manual rsync to reflect the few latest changes made to the dataset - it should be quick - and then I can simply unplug the disk and hand it to him.

What I'm wondering now is if there is a filesystem that let me do that. Because what I require is a filesystem that :
  • is readable and writeable on Nas4Free (FreeBSD)
  • is readable on MacOSX (he has only macs)
  • supports files larger than 4GB
Do you know if this is possible?
Or can you think of another method that could get me to a similar result?

Thank you for your help,
Fred "Bafforosso"

I'm assuming your friend would be unlikely to install osx_fuse or maczfs. Which leaves fat32, and its 4G limit.

If he is willing to install those then either UFS or ZFS can do the job.

If the files do not need to read by OSX you friend could also use VMs running Nas4Free to read the files

I am trying to do something similar. I have only Mac HW (NAS is an old MacPro tower.) Any pointers to where to find the maczfs or osx_fuse tools? I am not looking to change the entire Mac to UFS/ZFS but rather looking to allow read/write on an external HDD.
