New to finch

Post by fizzgig656 »

all, im new to jails finch / thebrig, my brain is beginning to hurt reading so many different pages!!!
now ive installed both in a dataset, but only just installed one working jail in thebrig, thebrig seems easier to see whats happening and obviously the webgui makes it easier for beginners, but ive heard finch can do more than just manage jails and im looking at MikeMac's plex in chroot.

questions,
what if anything do i have to be aware of in using finch?
as its all command line how can i easily monitor it/control things within?
Will there be a webgui?
Ive heard i need to keep it updated the same time as the base N4F OS? do i have to re-install anything if i rebuild the N4F OS or is it all kept via the config backup?
How do i un-install finch if i dont want to keep using it?

Also after installing finch and i log into my nas via SSH/putty i get a different prompt. why? i get " ltbowers ~/ root~$ " instead on "ltbowers: ~#"

Im sure some of you will be thinking these are easy questions, for that im sorry to ask but least it wont be too much to answer :D

Not nessesary, but...
- install finch into separate zfs dataset
- make zfs snapshot after sucessfull installation
- do the same with any serious change of software inside finch
- use rollback comnand to revert to saved snapshot in case if somethin goes wrong

a lot... a lot of unix commands

no for sure

Better yes. there are a few commands to update finch and software inatalled. It is the same as for normal freebasd installation. I have detailed explanation in my blog. but you rather should google for english instructions. By the way, nearest future there is no sign of major upgrades.

There is uninstall command - see finch web site

nas4free from the box uses tcsh shell and finch needs and installs bash shell. There is no so big difference for mere mortal ;) Google if need more info
