Installing XigmaNAS embedded using a USB installer stick

Here's a fast way to get a XigmaNAS server running. The embedded installation is recommended because it provides the most resilient experience for most users.

To get started, you'll need two 4GB or bigger USB sticks:

  • One that you'll write the installer image to.
  • One that you will install XigmaNAS to and use in the server as the boot device.

Step 1. Create the installer USB stick.

  1. First, download the latest “LiveUSB” .img.gz installer file.
  2. Uncompress that file to get the .img image file.
    1. Under Linux, use gunzip -k filename.img.gz
  3. Write the .img file to a USB stick
    1. Under Linux, use dd if=filename.img of=/dev/sdX bs=4M
    2. Under Windows, use a program like Win32DiskManager

Step 2. Prepare the USB stick that XigmaNAS embedded will be installed to.

  1. Format the other USB stick with a GPT partition table and an empty FAT32 partition.

Step 3. Boot the server.

  1. Initially, boot the server using the installer USB stick only.
  2. Plug in the second, empty USB stick once the server boots to the XigmaNAS login screen.
  3. Proceed with the installation instructions.
