Q: How do I fix CNID related errors that make AFP shares unaccessible, why does AFP stop working?
A:
This is usually caused by hidden Apple/AFP files on your share that have become corrupted. Fix the problem by deleting these files. The errors usually look like this:

Jul 12 21:12:34 xigmanas afpd[5984]: Warning: No CNID scheme for volume /mnt/raid. Using default.
Jul 12 21:12:34   xigmanas   afpd[5984]: cnid_open: dbenv->open (rw) of /mnt/raid/.AppleDB failed: DB_RUNRECOVERY: Fatal error, run database recovery
Jul 12 21:12:34   xigmanas   afpd[5984]: cnid_open: CATASTROPHIC ERROR opening database environment /mnt/raid/.AppleDB. Run db_recovery -c immediately
Jul 12 21:12:34 xigmanas afpd[5984]: Cannot open CNID db at [/mnt/raid].
Jul 12 21:12:34 xigmanas afpd[5984]: Fatal error: cannot open CNID or invalid CNID backend for /mnt/raid: cdb
Jul 12 21:12:34 xigmanas afpd[5984]: Fatal error: Unable to get stamp value from CNID backend
