ZFS Snapshots

Snapshots are very simple. A snapshot is a read-only reference to the state of a pool-dataset, dataset, or volume as of the precise moment the snapshot was taken. I say reference, and not copy, because as of the moment it is taken, it takes up no additional space, it just refers to the state and the blocks that make up the parent.

The snapshot only starts to “use” space as the parent stops referring to blocks that are referred to by the snapshot, either because files are modified or deleted in the parent.
